Mingoes destroy Gladiators 4-1
The University of The Bahamas Mingoes scored all their goals in the first half to take care of the Western Gladiators 4-1 Sunday, December 1 in the Bahamas Football Association Men's League.
UB saw four different players finding the back of the net at the Roscow A.L Davies Soccer Fields.
One of those scorers was Marlon Barnes who now has five goals this season. He scored the first goal for UB in the 13th minute to give them the 1-0 lead.
"I believe that I am in good form in terms of goal scoring having scored my fifth goal. As a strike I only have one job which is to put the ball in the back of the net," Barnes said.
Winger Sidney Decius scored his first goal as a Mingoe when he got the ball past the goalkeeper in the 21st minute. That goal put the Mingoes up 2-0.
"It is a good feeling to get on the scoresheet. I was working hard in practice and it was great to execute that in the game," Decius said.
Midfielder Ronaldo Green who scored two goals in the previous game joined the party in the 29th minute as the Mingoes were in full control of the game with the 3-0 lead. Winger O'Bryan Hinds had a lot of goalscoring opportunities all season but could not score. Hinds finally got on the scoresheet on a header in 45th minute as UB went up 4-0. The score remained the safe at the half.
UB head coach used all five of his substitutions – one in the first half and four in the second half to give his freshmen and bench players some action on the field. Barnes was happy with the team's overall performance.
"Hats off to the guys. We performed well.," Barnes said. "We had a field player played in goal and he played tremendously well. Once we keep playing like this, we can be more victorious as the season goes on."
One of those performances was by freshman Alix St. Hilaire who was thrust between the posts for the full 90 minutes. He made some key saves with the only goal coming in the 81st minute.
"I was not expecting that. I just wanted to play with my heart, to win and for the team. I did just that," St. Hilaire said.
The Mingoes return to action at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 8 at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.
