Mingoes blanks Inter 17 5-0 for first win of season

The University of The Bahamas Mingoes men's soccer team got the monkey off it's back with a 5-0 drubbing of Inter Nassau 17 F.C Wednesday, November 6 at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.

It was the first win of the young season in the Bahamas Football Association Bahamas Men's Soccer League. They were coming off a 2-0 loss to Renegades F.C three days prior and now sports a 1-1 win/loss record.

Team captain, Marlon Barnes who had two goals on Wednesday was happy with the way the squad responded.

"We went back to the drawing board and we came out here looking for the victory and that was what we got," Barnes said.

Barnes got the scoring going for UB when he shot the ball past the goalkeeper from just outside the 18-yard box in the seventh minute.

"I was very impressed with my performance. I stuck with the gameplan. I followed the gameplan and executed," Barnes said.

Midfielder Kevin Thomas capitalized on a free-kick from midfielder Ronaldo Green when he flirted with an offside to break free from the defenders in the 18-yard box to whip it into the back of the net in the 19th minute to put his team up 2-0.

"We caught them off-guard and lacking. They were not watching me and I stood in-between them and got the pass from Green and scored it. I was happy to help the team win," Thomas said.

UB was up 2-0 at the half.

The second half saw UB attacking more and pressing on defense looking to extend the lead. Barnes found the back of the net again in the 56th minute. Green finally got on the scoresheet in the 79th minute on a goal kick error. The 85th minute saw Green putting the icing on the cake as UB's defense and goalkeeper Joshua Dames finished with their first clean sheet of the season.

UB returns to action 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 13 at the RALD soccer fields.
